Irish Pointing

Scu and I headed to Ireland with Willie and Pat Scott to attend the Monksgrange point to point. Run at a staying track with soft ground there were some noteworthy performances. We find it so useful to see the full field in the paddock beforehand and it is interesting to see the four year olds in particular, and how they are physically coping with training and racing.

We also visited a producers…

Big River And Forest Des Aigles Win At Kelso

It was a super day for the yard at Kelso this afternoon with the talented youngsters, Big River and Forest Des Aigles winning.

Big River has huge talent and he is finally coming together. He took on a field of class horses and showed a latent ability to win by ten lengths. Everything about him points to being a better chaser and it is exciting for the yard to produce such a good horse. On…

Places At Musselburgh And On To Kelso

We had some most satisfactory places at Musselburgh this afternoon. Shanroe Street stepped up on his previous chase runs when making all and only being denied by a neck in the finish, to be second. This was a nice move forward for the novice chaser and with the better ground suiting him, he should find some winning opportunities this summer.

Catchthemoonlight also ran with credit to be third…

New Purchase Cockle Bay And Pre Musselburgh

At the Tattersalls Ireland Ascot Sales we bought the strong 16.2 hands high chasing type Cockle Bay by my favourite sire, Milan. The winner last time out of an Irish point to point on soft ground he had taken time to mature, and being from the family of Kerry National winner River Cora, he should have the stamina to win over staying distances in time. He was bought for £28,000 and is for sale. More…

Sammy B Wins At Haydock

Our one runner at Haydock, Sammy B, gave a brave performance to win on heavy going. We had thought long and hard about running against an improved Caroline Bailey horse, Robin Of Loxley, who carried experience and eight pounds less than he will when reassessed. However, at a track that is lucky for owner Geoff Brown, it was worth taking a chance, and the unfortunate fall of Caroline's horse gave…

A Solid Run From The Cobbler Swayne To Be Fourth

The Cobbler Swayne is making his way back to his peak as he showed at Wetherby with a good round of jumping, except for three out; it should not be long before he is winning again. His untimely blunder lost him valuable momentum and although he kept on he could not reach the front three. He has plenty of scope and should be spot on for the spring and early summer.

Rising Marianbard looked…

Pre Wetherby

Lots of trotting and cantering to start the horses off for the week, and some schooling for a couple who are due to run. These included The Cobbler Swayne, Tap Night, Sammy B and Gaye Flier.

The Cobbler Swayne and Rising Marienbard left for Wetherby this afternoon as there are is a pretty bad weather forecast for tomorrow morning.

The Cobbler Swayne looks to be coming back to form…

Weekend Roundup

At Uttoxeter Sky Khan ran well to be fifth on going that was on the soft side or him. He will come on for this run and Aintree is now in his sights. Newtown Lad was running a fine race, jumping with boldness but following a stumble he made a rare error at the next fence and had a nasty looking fall. He was swiftly caught and looked after by Mark and Jaimie and is luckily sound this morning.

Today…

Pre Saturday Runners

We have two runners at Uttoxeter tomorrow and one at Newcastle.

Newtown Lad faces a good test in the novice handicap chase but after an improved run in blinkers last time he is well up to the step up in class. He will be fine on the going and looks a generous price to me.

Sky Khan makes a return to the track with a tongue strap. He often improves for his first run after a break but…

Golden Double At Hexham

A fabulous double for the yard at Hexham with two golden oldies Bescot Springs and Settledoutofcourt winning gamely.

Bescot Springs has found his form again and was given a good ride by Alex. He may be a schoolmaster but he is tricky to keep interested and Alex has found a key to him. It was excellent to have a Kelso Members Lowflyers winner again, may there be many more.

Settledoutofcourt…
