Mighty Thunder ran a super race to be second in the Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter, travelling like a dream and hitting the front with a big leap at the third last. Staying on dourly he was just run out of it a few strides from the line to be second. This was another improved run from the novice chaser who seems to love the pace of the staying chases, and he is one to dream about next season. He will have an entry in the Scottish National and BET 365 Chase at Sandown and we will see how he is at home before deciding where he goes. Whatever, his owners, Allson Sparkle have a lovely staying chaser on their hands.
We had some good runs in defeat across two cards; Shanroe Street was fourth, staying back on having been outpaced in the three mile chase at Newcastle, and similarly Bialco rallied having looked out of the race in the two and a half mile hurdle. Both could do with softer ground. Petite Rhapsody pulled too hard in the bumper and paid the penalty up the home straight, while Voix D'Eau showed the faintest glimmer of hope in the two and a half mile chase at Uttoxeter and is not one to be written off just yet.
